FAQ
-
What is a paludarium and how is it different from an aquarium or terrarium?
A paludarium is a hybrid enclosure that combines land and water elements, ideal for semi-aquatic species like vampire crabs. Unlike aquariums (all water) or terrariums (all land), paludariums simulate natural ecosystems with both environments.
-
What do vampire crabs need in their tank?
Vampire crabs require at least a 5-gallon tank with 80% land and 20% water, high humidity (70%+), hiding places, and moderate heating (22–28°C). Learn more in our vampire crab paludarium guide.
-
How do I heat a paludarium for vampire crabs?
Paludariums can be heated using ceramic heat emitters, under-tank heat mats, or ambient room heat. Avoid direct heat sources in the water zone. See our heating guide for safe methods.
-
Can I keep multiple vampire crab species (colours) together?
You can keep vampire crabs in groups, but only 1 species (colour) of vampire crab per tank. If you mix colours, they will almost always kill each other. If you want multiple species or colours you will need a separate tank for each type.
-
Do vampire crabs need a filter in their tank?
Yes, a small internal or sponge filter helps keep the shallow water zone clean. Choose a filter with gentle flow to avoid disturbing the land area. A filter also prevents buildup of harmful bacteria.
-
Where can I buy vampire crabs?
Vampire crabs are best purchased from specialty reptile stores. Avoid wild-caught specimens (if possible) and look for healthy, tank-bred crabs. We don’t sell them but offer setup guides to help you care for them.
-
Why do my vampire crabs keep dying?
1. Too much water and not enough dry land (they are not aquatic)
2. Low humidity (should stay above 70%)
3. No hiding spots or territorial stress from multiple males
4. Incorrect temperatures (ideal is 22–28°C air, 22–25°C water)
