Where to get Vampire Crabs in Australia?

Vampire Crabs (Geosesarma) are a species of small freshwater crabs commonly found in the aquarium trade. These crabs are known for their vibrant colours, and relatively small size, making them a popular choice for paludarium setups.

WHERE TO BUY VAMPIRE CRABS IN AUSTRALIA?

As these crabs are native to Southeast Asia this unfortunately makes them a Biosecurity risk for Australia. As a result, Vampire Crabs “all Geosesarma” species are banned from sale in Australia. The same goes for Borneo Crabs “all Lepidothelphusa” species which are also banned in Australia.

If you do see either of these species for sale in Australia please report them to the appropriate authorities as these crabs will cause chaos if they ever get established in the wild. Especially in the northernmost regions of Australia. It isn’t a case of if but when. Non-native species like this always escape! And with Vampire Crabs being masters of escape the situation is even more high risk.

“People who jeopardise Australia’s biosecurity system by failing to comply with these requirements will face civil penalties of up to 1,200 penalty units, or $266,400.

FRESHWATER CRABS FOR SALE IN AUSTRALIA

These little Crabs naturally occur in Northern Australia. Living in Rivers and Billabongs. During the dry seasons (Normally in winter) they will borrow down into the Sand/Mud until the summer rains come again. They are a Northern Australian Species so they prefer warmer temperatures (18C-28C) PH 6.5–7.5 (But keep it over 7 they don’t like acid water)

You can keep these Crabs with other fish. But faster swimming fish would be better, as they will try and eat a fish if they can catch them. If he finds a fish that is sick, dead or dying it’s going to be food.

It is also recommended as they are Amphibious by nature if you can have a rock or driftwood protruding out of the water providing a little island to sit on they will appreciate it. They are fascinating creatures and are great fun to watch.
