TUERKAYANA HIRTIPES CARE GUIDE
Author: Albomita
Tuerkayana hirtipes is distinguished from related Discoplax species by its smooth, distinctly inflated carapace and its blue to blue-brown colouration, unlike the purple hues of others. The species has a breeding season lasting about seven months, during which females migrate to the sea to release their larvae.
This crab is widely distributed across the western Pacific, including southern Japan, Taiwan, southern China, Palau, Guam, eastern Australia, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. Originally described in 1851 as Cardisoma hirtipes from specimens collected in Fiji, it was reassigned to the genus Tuerkayana in 2018 after a taxonomic revision of the Gecarcinidae family. Records from the Indian Ocean once attributed to this species are now recognised as separate related species.
