This crab is widely distributed across the western Pacific, including southern Japan, Taiwan, southern China, Palau, Guam, eastern Australia, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. Originally described in 1851 as Cardisoma hirtipes from specimens collected in Fiji, it was reassigned to the genus Tuerkayana in 2018 after a taxonomic revision of the Gecarcinidae family.
