DO VAMPIRE CRABS NEED A FILTER OR PUMP?
Do vampire crabs need a filter or pump?
Vampire crabs (Geosesarma species) are mostly terrestrial crab species that require both land and water in their habitat. I get a lot of questions about whether a filter or pump is necessary for their tank and the answer is that a pump or filter is entirely optional, especially if you have a well-planned water section. Below, we explain how to maintain water quality with or without a pump.
The Role of Plants in Water Quality
If you have a planted water section, aquatic plants naturally help maintain water quality by:
Absorbing excess nutrients
Oxygenating the water
Providing surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow
This creates a low-maintenance ecosystem, reducing the need for artificial filtration. However, while plants assist in water quality, they do not eliminate the need for regular maintenance, including water changes.
Importance of Water Changes
Even in a planted setup, regular water changes are necessary to prevent mineral buildup from evaporation and water top-ups. Over time, minerals accumulate, leading to poor water conditions that can affect your crabs’ health. To maintain optimal water quality:
Perform small water changes (20-30%) every 1-2 weeks. Though you can go up to 50% if you want to. Just avoid bigger ones as the water parameter changes might be big enough to shock the inhabitants.
Use dechlorinated or conditioned water when refilling. Or RO water that you have remineralised.
Using a Pump or Filter
If you prefer, you can add any type of pump or filter to your vampire crab habitat. While not required, a filter can:
Help circulate and oxygenate water
Remove debris and improve clarity
Reduce the frequency of manual water changes
Popular choices include sponge filters, small internal filters, or gentle hang-on-back filters. However, vampire crabs do not require strong water movement, so choose a low-flow filter to avoid disturbing their habitat.
